Story
In 1942, America's deadliest fighter pilot, or "ace of aces" - the legendary Eddie Rickenbacker - offered a bottle of bourbon to the first US fighter pilot to break his record of 26 enemy planes shot down. Seizing on the challenge to motivate his men, General George Kenney promoted what they would come to call the "race of aces" as a way of boosting the spirits of his war-weary command.

Inspiring yet heartbreaking

Incredible story, describing some very brave, absolutely heroic men, both pilots and ground crew, doing their duty for country, and each other. Also describes a brutal competition that served to focus, yet also pushed some to lose focus, forgetting lessons learned, lapses in prioritization, that would ultimately be their undoing. A must read for pilots and aviation enthusiasts.

Story
On his second combat tour, Nick Brokhausen served in Recon Team Habu, CCN. This unit was part of MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group), or Studies and Observations Group as it was innocuously called. The small recon companies that were the center of its activities conducted some of the most dangerous missions of the war, infiltrating areas controlled by the North Vietnamese in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. The companies never exceeded more than 30 Americans, yet they were the best source for the enemy's disposition.

A really well written account of participation in SOG missions. The book is infused with drama, and violence, while also maintaining of perspective humor and a sense of humanity. Great story told by a very talented writer. Difficult to even imagine the realm he must, on occasion, visit in his dreams...

John Plaster’s riveting account of his covert activities as a member of a special operations team during the Vietnam War is “a true insider’s account...this eye-opening report will leave readers feeling as if they’ve been given a hot scoop on a highly classified project” (Publishers Weekly). Code-named the Studies and Observations Group, SOG was the most secret elite US military unit to serve in the Vietnam War - so secret that its very existence was denied by the government.

First 3rd of the story was decent, the rest beyond boring. No action, no tension, certainly no thrills. Just blah blah blah blah, in various international locations. Very disappointing.

Since this guy couldn't stop with the politics, he should have been a politician. Seems to me, he disrespects the stories and the characters with his total inability to just tell the stories and be propagandizing. Then there is the old cassette tape audio, pretty bad all in all.

An amazing account of a warrior, and American hero. Get a sense for the patience and discipline, stealth and courage required to be a sniper in Viet Nam, and live to tell about it. More, it's a story of a man born to be a Marine legend. Can sleep soundly knowing such men are out there.

Story
In the early hours of February 25, 1968, a Russian submarine armed with three nuclear ballistic missiles set sail from its base in Siberia on a routine combat patrol to Hawaii. Then it vanished. As the Soviet navy searched in vain for the lost vessel, a small, highly classified American operation using sophisticated deep-sea spy equipment found it - wrecked on the sea floor at a depth of 16,800 feet, far beyond the capabilities of any salvage that existed.
