Story
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to find yourself strapped to a giant rocket that's about to go from zero to 17,500 miles per hour? Or to look back on Earth from outer space and see the surprisingly precise line between day and night? Or to stand in front of the Hubble Space Telescope, wondering if the emergency repair you're about to make will inadvertently ruin humankind's chance to unlock the universe's secrets? Mike Massimino has been there, and in Spaceman he puts you inside the suit.

I like to listen to books while driving. I’m sure Mr. Massimino has a good story to tell, but like many authors who read their own books, he doesn’t know how to project his voice. Parts of sentences are loud and clear while other parts drop off to a whisper. I can’t listen to it.

Story
Pulitzer Prize, Biography, 2016. Barbarian Days is William Finnegan's memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life.

A case in point: authors seldom make good readers.

A painful reading of a story that otherwise would be interesting to hear. I would not recommend this audio book. The author's tired reading drops off in the last syllables of every single sentence. If you try to listen in a car with any road noise at all, you get only the first half of every sentence. Too bad the reading wasn't given to a professional.

Story
Rising from the depths of the North Pacific lies a fabled island, now submerged just 15 feet below the surface of the ocean. Rumors and warnings about Cortes Bank abound, but among big wave surfers, this legendary rock is famous for one simple (and massive) reason: this is the home of the biggest rideable wave on the face of the earth.

It's a good story with rich background research by the author. He should have left the reading to a professional voice that would lend weight and drama to the telling. As it is, it's hard to listen to. Mr. Dixon's reading is sophomoric.

Story
A dramatic countdown of the final months of World War II in Europe, The Last 100 Days brings to life the waning power and the ultimate submission of the Third Reich. To reconstruct the tumultuous hundred days between Yalta and the fall of Berlin, John Toland traveled more than 100,000 miles in twenty-one countries and interviewed more than six hundred people - from Hitler's personal chauffeur to Generals von Manteuffel, Wenck, and Heinrici.

Narrator's voice drops off, drives me crazy.

Would you try another book from John Toland and/or Ralph Cosham?
No. I love the story but can't stand the reader's style. Mr. Cosham has a habit of ending every single sentence without fail on the downbeat with a lowered vocal volume, so I strain to hear the very last part of every sentence unless I have the volume turned up higher than normal, which makes the rest of the reading a bit too loud. This is particularly true if I'm listening in the car, which is almost always.
Would you be willing to try another one of Ralph Cosham’s performances?
Hell no.
Was The Last 100 Days worth the listening time?
Great history.
