This book is a quagmire, in that it's pace is bogged down and the plot, despite being more linear than previous books, leads nowhere.

You could easily skip this book and not miss a beat when the third one comes out. Character development is nonexistent and the new characters added are so cookie cutter that you can fill in the blanks. The overall plot isn't advanced until the last chapter. First part would have worked better as the end of the first book. The middle part is padding the page count with a mini arc that goes nowhere (could have been a good stand alone). The book finishes as a bad Harry Potter rip off, names included.

Character wise, Armon is still clueless (which is good considering how OP he is if he thought thinks through). Mary (Captain Hindsight) is still annoying, worthless, and toxic to the groups progression. Verax is one track minded that he becomes underused. Newcomer Kitsune's one character flaw is pointless given her role in the group. I would have rather seen them play up the "rescued royalty" angle for her.

As for the LitRPG elements, they seem meaninglessly tact on. Levels don't seem to matter. A group of 4 (levels 3-5) outmatch a group of 7 (levels 7+). Stats are used for jokes (Mary can't open a door or lift a glass because of her strength stat) but have no bearing on Armon duel wielding shield and spear. Characters can't keep track of their skills. Armon only uses his Aspect of the Kobold skill as a disguise vice as armor in fights.

TL;DR: Book feels like a cash grab and trying to keep the series in the minds of the community.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Off the back read the chapters as normal numbers vice reading the binary each time. It jars you out of the story flow to hear a string of 1's and 0's.

What could Jaron Lee Knuth have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The begin drags a bit before getting to the setup. It could have used a little more player interact with other parties.

What three words best describe John Pirhalla’s performance?

Only polish so much

Was Level Zero: A LitRPG Adventure worth the listening time?

passes the time

Any additional comments?

Not a lot of RPG elements. This could have easily been trapped in a first person shooter.

Would you try another book from Terry Schott and/or Luke Daniels?

I'm still planning on reading the story that was previewed, twice now, at the end of the book.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Soulstone: The Skeleton King by J.A. Cipriano

Which character – as performed by Luke Daniels – was your favorite?

I want to say Sam but the lack of character development makes him a hard sell.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Shadows?

The subplot with the two girls and the "Red Hoodie". It served no purpose towards the story and only made the characters more foolish. Those pages could have been used to flush out the Kyle character.
