Story
When Jenny inherits her estranged grandmother’s cottage in Sherwood Forest, she has nothing to lose - no money, no job, no friends, no family to speak of, and zero self-respect. Things can only get better.... Her grumpy but decidedly handsome new neighbour, Mack, has a habit of bestowing unsolicited good deeds on her. And when Jenny is welcomed into a rather unusual book club, life seems to finally be getting more interesting. Instead of reading, the members pledge to complete individual challenges before Christmas.

Through most of this book I thought I didn’t like it until closer to the end when it became more interesting. I do think the storyline kind of dragged on. But the writing was flowery and very expressive and creative. I really did enjoy the writing style just not have a storyline dragged on

Story
Poet Ocean Vuong’s debut novel is a shattering portrait of a family, a first love, and the redemptive power of storytelling. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late 20s, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born - a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam - and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation.

This is beautifully told like an extended piece of poetry. The author does a brilliant job with the narration as well. It is as if he is telling his own story right from the bottom of his soul.

I felt like the book was slow to start but it did give enough information to get to like the characters before it picked up its pace. I also found it it was wound up a little too quickly and some of the sentiment could’ve been carried on longer. I wasn’t ready for it to end basically. I really enjoyed it and I’m going to recommend it to my local book club for a summer read

Thirty years later as a successful businesswoman, she did it, buying a 15-acre farm deep in the Pinelands of South Jersey. She was planning to relocate Annie and her caravan of ragtag rescues - horses and goats, dogs and cats, chickens and pigs - when Annie died, just two weeks before moving day. Disappointed but still a good book
Reviewed: 05-14-22
This book is mostly about the life of the author and very much less about the animals that she has rescued. That said, I wasn’t disappointed because she had an interesting life and I enjoyed reading about it but I wish the synopsis had better reflected the content of the book. Good narration.

After taking a few weeks off work, Casey is presented with a new foster child: 14-year-old Elise, whose Mum left her at just five years old. At first, she’s no trouble at all, that is until she falsely accuses another carer, Jan, of acting inappropriately towards her. It turns out this isn’t the first lie Elise has told—her previous carer was constantly following up allegations Elise had made of people bullying her, trying to have sex with her or hurting her physically.

This is the best book by the author so far and I have read all of her books. Also, the narrator finally has come up with a good tone and pace that do not sound terrible I actually enjoyed reading and listening to her in this book. In previous books she was so difficult to tolerate. Really impressed with both of them and think they have both grown a lot in writing and presenting a book

Soon, she began penning songs and singing in front of honky-tonk audiences and eventually made her way to Nashville, securing her place in country music history.

Details her life, her beliefs, her opinions, and what it was like growing up poor and then living life on the road as a musician. She is down-to-earth and full of raw emotion. This is one of the most brilliant things I have ever read I am so impressed and fascinated.

Story
In 1961, Sarah M. Broom’s mother Ivory Mae bought a shotgun house in the then-promising neighborhood of New Orleans East and built her world inside of it. It was the height of the Space Race and the neighborhood was home to a major NASA plant - the postwar optimism seemed assured. A book of great ambition, Sarah M. Broom’s The Yellow House tells a hundred years of her family and their relationship to home in a neglected area of one of America’s most mythologized cities.

This book is sad but I loved it as I love all books by this author. I knew someone would die in the book and I successfully guessed who, but that didn't detract from the book. This was another great story from my favorite foster care author.
