suspenseful!
Reviewed: 08-30-10
This audiobook grabbed me from the first. The plot is actually very interesting, especially if you like period novels. This one is set in London. It has the drama of "aristocracy meets working class," and in this case the woman is lovely, strong and hard working. The aristocrat of the story is a rather handsome, yet unloved/unlovable duke. If you've ever read a romance novel, you can imagine what happens. It's also a murder mystery with all the normal conflicts and plot twists. The dialogue is believable and the narrator is good. One caution, for those not interested in, um, "romantic" scenes. This audio book is full of "romance." They're done well and add to the thrill of the story, so to speak, but if you were to fast-forward through them you'd be left with a pretty quick story. Overall this audio book kept me on the treadmill a lot longer, helped with the housework, and was definitely entertaining, so it gets 5 stars.

Story
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Not only was this a fantastic book, I ADORED listening to the narration by these wonderful readers. With their distinct accents lending personality to each character, the book came alive for me. This was a real treat, one of the best audiobooks I've ever heard!

Story
A fabulous lost Amazon city once inhabited by women warriors and containing a rare red diamond: it sounded like myth, but archeologist Jillian Sherwood believed it was real, and she was willing to put up with anything to find it - even Ben Lewis. Ruffian, knock-about, and number one river guide in Brazil, Ben was all man - over six feet of rock-hard muscles that rippled under his khakis, with lazy blue eyes that taunted her from his tanned face.

boring
Reviewed: 04-28-09
I have read her books before, and they are usually not at all boring. But this audio book is SO dull. I suspect the narrator has something to do with it. She talks slowly, with an English accent of some sort. Also, the story line bounces between the 4 sisters, and they were partnered up with their respective beaus early on, so there's no suspense. I may not make it the whole way through this one.

Rock is something of a nerd - or so his best friend, Kelli, has always claimed, simply because he's a brainy guy. He's an up-and-coming businessman, determined to go far fast - and he's the total opposite of fun-loving Kelli. To his regret, Kelli has always seen him as a best friend, never as a potential lover.

If you're looking for something to pass the time, this is entertaining. It's not particularly suspenseful or unusual - just about what you'd expect from a Harlequin. Still, good for two workouts...

Very funny. I was laughing out loud at the gym. (also many cringe-worthy moments, which makes it very captivating.) My only criticism is that the narrator's voice did not seem to match the age of the main character. It took a while for me to get past that. I wish they had used a more youthful sounding person.

I couldn't put down the ipod. Despite the cynicism of the narrator, you really pull for him. It's a very interesting voice. There are tons of f-bombs and lots of violence, so it's a little surprising that this soccer mom liked the book so much. All I can say is it's very suspenseful and entertaining - a really good escape. Reminded me of the Sopranos.
