Story
On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

Science Fiction at Operatic Scale
Reviewed: 11-25-21
The Canterbury Tales meets science fiction and the result works. The story is engaging and highly imaginative without ever being preposterous. The characters are compelling over the long novel and under Simmons pen they come alive and the reader cares about their fates. The voice acting is superior. Those who like science fiction at a vast scale will not be disappointed.

Jeremy Bremen has a secret. All his life he's been cursed with the ability to read minds. He knows the secret thoughts, fears, and desires of others as if they were his own. For years, his wife, Gail, has served as a shield between Jeremy and the burden of this terrible knowledge. I wanted to like it but couldn’t
Reviewed: 11-25-21
Dan Simmons has written stories with compelling characters and clever plots. Unfortunately, this is not one of those stories. The main character is hard to like and spends most of the novel going from one implausible situation to another and with his escapes becoming increasingly cartoonish. The science fiction premise is promising but is effectively smothered by heavy handed, dense expositions which leave the reader confused. There are also gratuitous scenes of graphic harm to children that can be quite off-putting.

Story
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

Entertaining, surprising and accessible
Reviewed: 02-20-12
John Scalzi wrote a highly entertaining and engaging space tale brought to life by William Dufris' superb performance. The science in this fiction tale impressive but is related in a way that's accessible to the general reader. The story is exceptionally well-paced and populated by characters whose fate comes to quickly matter to the reader.

Story
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

An entertaining yet highly derivative thriller.
Reviewed: 02-20-12
Joe Barrett's voicing was excellent. He seemlessly transitioned among the characters and his narration brought the story to life. Mr. Forschten's tale is an effective thriller and he goes to some length to explain the science of the enormous tragedy which drives the story. Some of the behaviors of the main character are a tad wooden and some of dialogue is stilted. That's a minor quibble in an otherwise well-paced tale. The major criticism is that so much of the novel is so highly derivative Lucifer's Hammer, a novel that covered much of the same fictional environment as Mr. Forschten's book but did so with better characterizations.
