Story
Blackwater is the saga of a small town, Perdido, Alabama, and Elinor Dammert, the stranger who arrives there under mysterious circumstances on Easter Sunday, 1919. On the surface, Elinor is gracious, charming, anxious to belong in Perdido, and eager to marry Oscar Caskey, the eldest son of Perdido's first family. But her beautiful exterior hides a shocking secret. Beneath the waters of the Perdido River, she turns into something terrifying, a creature whispered about in stories that have chilled the residents of Perdido for generations.

Can't put my finger on it
Reviewed: 03-06-20
I can't explain to you why, but this creation is one of the loveliest experiences I have ever had whilst reading. I want to start right over at the beginning so I can better understand just why I so enjoyed the journey of this family. What is it that has moved me so in this twisted love story fairy tale and everyday family entanglements in an unbelievably picturesque backdrop of excess? If I were to try to explain the plot to say, myself, I would think it sounded like a terrible waste of time and yet it may just be in the top 10 best books I've ever read. It knocked Great Expectations down a notch, that's for sure.

Story
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

Beautiful and Raw
Reviewed: 10-08-18
Takes a hard look at the lasting effects of trauma as well as the beauty of love, family, and friendship. As sorrowful and terrible the subject matter, it is equally as beautiful. Also, I appreciate how the severity of the trauma is portrayed with care. I often find other authors choose to overly describe sexual assault in such graphic detail, like porn, that its unreadable for me. Sexual assault is not entertainment and shouldn't be written about with anything other than reverence; this author has truly accomplished that.

When they met at an airport, it was love at first sight. But in time, everything collapsed. As an unnamed but unforgettable woman muses on her life—from meet cute to marriage and parenthood—her recollections inexorably build to a devastating truth. In this shattering performance, Carey Mulligan, star of the critically lauded drama An Education, captivates audiences with playwright Dennis Kelly’s harrowing ruminations on family, ambition, gender, and violence.

I couldn't make my self finish it. Shallow, repetitive and so boring. The narrator was great, just couldn't slug through the second have of the book.

Poor fan fiction of We Need to Talk about Kevin

Just fell flat. Way over hyped and completely disappointing. The ending was not much of a ending at all; possibly an attempt at a cliff hanger for a second book. If there is a sequel, I'll be skipping it.

Authorities hard to believe...
Reviewed: 04-04-18
The storyline just got to be very unrealistic. There is no way authorities, first responders, and EMTs would ignore an injured child at a crime scene. Said child, obviously suffering from a severe beating and possible broken ribs was denied immediate medical attention? Seriously? There were many other things that were just so completely unreasonable for similar reasons that I found myself likening it to a soap opera rather than a great read.

Natural resources empower the world's most coercive men. Autocrats like Putin and the Saudis spend oil money on weapons and repression. ISIS and Congo's militias spend resource money on atrocities and ammunition. For decades resource-fueled authoritarians and extremists have forced endless crises on the West - and the ultimate source of their resource money is us, paying at the gas station and the mall.
