Eye Opening Story, Unique Tale
Reviewed: 03-26-24
Chris's book is scheduled to become a movie at some future date. It is intense, emotional, and brings to light a part of the service rarely considered. I can't wait to see what they do with this incredible tale written by a veteran who experienced this role as a career. Chris did a fantastic job on this debut novel, and the audio version is extremely well done.

Story
Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

I adored this book. Having met C. J. Box at an author's convention last year, I couldn't wait to read his books. We chatted for hours at a cocktail reception about his life on his ranch, family, the lives we lead as authors, and shared many a funny story. He signed my paperback version of this book, which I treasure, but I decided to listen to it in audiobook instead. He is an interesting man, a great guy, and a fantastic author. This story did not disappoint. It is my first but won't be my last. I intend to read them all. and any future books he publishes. Way to go, C. J.

Former movie star Jenna Hughes left Hollywood for an isolated farm in Oregon to get away from fame. But someone has followed her - an obsessed fan whose letters are personal and deeply disturbing. And while Jenna's already shaken up by what she's seen on paper, she'd be terrified if she knew what Sheriff Shane Carter is investigating. It's a shocking case that started with the discovery of a dead woman in the woods. Now two more women are missing, one of whom bears a striking resemblance to Jenna...

This is my favorite book this month. I totally loved it. It was suspenseful, heart wrenching, chilling, and thrilling all at once. I loved the writing. Characters were well delineated and distinct, loveable and broken, making me want to hug them and root for them. Everything from background music to the speaker's voice was perfect for the story. I highly recommend this one.
