With the Old Breed Audiobook By E. B. Sledge cover art

Wow what a book...

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

I started with the Bill Sloan books (you should read this first) then read Bill's two books in order so that you can keep the thread and remember the details.

In all the other military history books I've read I've never gotten the sense of what the grunts went through, EB Sledge explains the horrors of war in intimate detail. Great read but very sobering.

Better than his last book but...

I'm having a hard time wanting to continue with the series as the books are predictable and charters boring. I literally want to b*tch-slap John Piece half the time while reading... oh well... Master and Commander this is not!

Give it time...

Overall

This series is over 20 volumes long. To hear others say "I gave up after two hours" makes me want to laugh. Did you not realize there are 20+ books in this series, with antiquated language, sailing ship descriptions and military terms.

If you plan on getting into this series, plan on not understanding the plot or language for the first half of this book (unless you're familiar with the period or Royal Navy). However, once the action starts and you get into the characters, it's very rewarding. I consider this series the cornerstone of military histories. It is well worth the time and investment in the story and characters. I was depressed when I finished book 21 and realized there would be no more new stories of Jack or Steven...

I've "read" over 300 books on Audible and these books are my favorites.

The first half is really slow but once the Allies enter Germany, second half of the book, it gets much better.

Catch Me If You Can Audiobook By Frank W. Abagnale, Stan Redding cover art

Frank's a jerk

Overall
3 out of 5 stars

This book should have been titled: "why Frank Abagnale is wonderful by Frank Abagnale"

Having watched the movie prior to reading the book I was appalled by the astounding selfishness of the "real" Frank Abagnale (FA). After reading the book I am convinced he's a sociopath without the violent tenancies. I liked the movie version of FA but the real FA is a man the world would have been better off without. It's too bad he wasn't left in the French prison for a few more years.

I'm at 200 books from audible and this is in my top three. Coming from middle class, white America I didn't think I'd enjoy this book so much. It was spellbinding and the narration was exquisite! WOW.

Wow, where did Donachie go wrong???

Overall
2 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 07-23-09

I have read or listened to, almost every Royal Navy series out there and enjoyed the first three Donachie (Pierce) novels. However, this book felt like 20 middle chapter in a much larger work. Unfortunately, those 20 chapters did very little to forward the story (imo) and were mind numbingly boring.

I don't have any problems with long charter development books (like Post Captain) but this one was utterly without action and suspense.

I hope the next Pierce novel is better and actually has some amount of sea-born action or I'll be forced to give up on the series. PLEASE let the next novel be better!

The only book I haven't been able to finish...

Overall
1 out of 5 stars

I've currently listened to over 200 books from Audible, and this was the first I couldn't make it through. I felt like this was a text book with little personality and the author seemed to have taken the marine lore hook, line and sinker.

I have great respect for our military, esp, the Marine Corp but there are many better books that inspire (No True Glory, Black Hawk Down and Flags of our Fathers just to name a few). If you're looking for a text book account of the Marine Corp history this is your book!
