The narration was very well done. The music, however, unnecessary and intrusive. I think there is a good reason why most audio books do not have musical accompaniment!

As a mom of a teenager who was sexually assaulted I wasn’t sure I could handle listening to this story. But this story is more about the parents than the kids. I found myself identifying with Lyla’s dad’s outrage and with Nina’s desire to protect Lyla. In spite of the teenagers’ actions, this is a healing story.

This is one of my favorite Kristan Higgins’ stories. I adopted my daughter, and I really appreciated the portrayal of a well-adjusted adopted person who - though curious about her birth family - is firmly attached to her adoptive family. It’s so nice not to hear the moniker « real mom » applied to birth mom.
Beyond that, I appreciated the many strong female characters as well as the way the girls in the story.

The premise of the story was interesting, but I confess my attention wandered at some points. The narrator, however, was brilliant. She did a great job capturing all of these characters.

Glaubwürdige, interessante Figuren, komplexe menschliche Beziehungen, interessanter Schauplatz - dieser Roman hat alles. Als Amerikanerin mit dem Wunsch auszuwandern war die Geschichte für mich höchst relevant.

I’m not interested - generally - in celebrity autobiographies, and I’m a highly selective reader. A friend - a writer - who shares my taste in books said it blew her mind. Surprising, suspenseful, I enjoyed this well-crafted story and learned a lot. The best book I’ve read this year!

Not a Minnesota Accent

I just listened to the first chapter of this book. I was impressed with Laurie Hertzel’s review in the Minneapolis Star and Tribune and was looking forward to reading it.
Honestly, I’m not far enough into the book to be able to comment on the story (I couldn’t leave this note without giving stars for “Overall” and “Story”. I gave the writer the benefit of the doubt). But I wanted to issue a warning to other listeners, particulaly life-long residents of Minnesota. I am so bothered by the narrator’s impression of a Minnesota accent, that I don’t think I’ll make it through the Audible version. The accent- which the narrator cannot sustain - has a hint of a Wisconsin accent and a whiff of some not-well-mastered Scandanavian accent. I hear something like a restrained Appalachian accent break through ocassionally.
For many readers, this may not matter. But for Minnesotans, it distracts and detracts from the story. I’ll buy the print version and hope I can get that inauthentic accent out of my head.
I’m sorry to leave a negative review. I’m just so disappointed in the Audible narration.

Loved Every Minute!

I was a little too young to be a David Cassidy fan, but I fell hard for Shaun. I love the author's exploration of this topic: why do young girls go crazy over these beautiful, barely adult men? The answers are not so simple. More interesting, why is it so *real* to us? Allison Pearson portrays the young fan's thoughts and emotions, while never making fun of them. She captured the young girl I was perfectly.

This is my second time listening to this audiobook. As with all of Dickens’ works, there are a good number of dastardly characters. The narrator manages to represent each one with a different voice.
