I marvel at the depth of detail and the sweep of history covered in this audiobook.Names that I first encountered in Physics text books at school leap from the pages. Names associated with theorems and rules become personalities with foibles and opinions. I struggle to believe that the environment that fostered Oppenheimer, Teller, Bohr and other greats still exist in our modern campuses. The way that Oppenheimer was crucified for conversations and friendships by the right wing is now being repeated in the reverse with left wing zealots crushing careers. The conclusion was that Macarthyism and the government destroyed the final years of Oppenheimer's career but I dispute that. That certainly was the atmosphere but Lewis Strauss's machinations organising FBI wire taps and structuring a hearing manifestly unfair to Oppenheimer ensured a result that would not necessarily have lead to him losing his security clearance without these behind the scenes manipulations. I thoroughly recommend this book and I haven't even mentioned the Los Alamos section.
