Story
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

What a gem

As a committed fan of books on redemption, this one has snuck into my top 5. J.D. not only surprises and inspires but also provides a spark of hope for middle America, where hard working/tough as nails grit is just the right combination to create amazing ends. Both personally and economically /spiritually. I also like his centrist political stance, where he neither convicts or endorse Right or Left, while challenging all of us to lean in and help our fellow man.

Story
General George S. Patton, Jr., died under mysterious circumstances in the months following the end of World War II. For almost 70 years, there has been suspicion that his death was not an accident - and may very well have been an act of assassination. Killing Patton will take listeners inside the final year of the war and recount the events surrounding Patton's tragic demise, naming names of the many powerful individuals who wanted him silenced.

The things I never knew
Reviewed: 10-09-17
As US Citizen in my early 50’s, I’m embarrassed to admit how little I know about the details of WWII, least of which how complicated our alliance with Russia was and the unintended consequences that came from the relationship. In an era where that war has seemingly been reduced to, “Hitler was bad,” and the US wasn’t much better for dropping A bombs, so much is glossed over if not mentioned at all. Russia was really bad, led by Stalin, who apparently was responsible for far more deaths than Hitler was; while pre WWII Japan in its quest to control a One-Asia, makes modern day terrorism look elementary school bully behavior. Thanks to the authors who’ve brought so much to light that we need to know to this very day. There are critical lessons for all us by understanding the details of The who, what, why and when of this part of world history.

Story
Autumn 1944. World War II is nearly over in Europe but is escalating in the Pacific, where American soldiers face an opponent who will go to any length to avoid defeat. The Japanese army follows the samurai code of Bushido, stipulating that surrender is a form of dishonor. Killing the Rising Sun takes listeners to the bloody tropical-island battlefields of Peleliu and Iwo Jima and to the embattled Philippines, where General Douglas MacArthur has made a triumphant return and is plotting a full-scale invasion of Japan.

The why behind the Pacific Theater
Reviewed: 09-22-17
As someone born at the end of the baby boomer period, my awareness of WWII is limited to three major themes. Hitler was the worst; the US was its own bad actor because it dropped two A bombs on Japan, yet because of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor there was rationalization for the response. Beyond that, I admit a poor grasp of what else was going on... This book changes all of that and has opened my eyes to many things - many of which that I will never forget. Thank you Bill, for the incredible amount of work you put into this story. It needed to be told. Our history books continue to get thinner by the editions.

Triumph over peril

Running with Raven tells an incredible story of a man who chose to straighten out his life, where when so many others in similar circumstances choose a life of emptiness. Raven has listened to this version of the book and asserts that Ms. Ryan, does his voice/and intent a lot of justice. As I've now listened to it twice, I contest it's one of the finest books on redemption I've read. Knowing that Raven is still alive and well, and is still running daily, makes this story even more powerful.

Story
Explore the power of the underdog in Malcolm Gladwell's dazzling examination of success, motivation, and the role of adversity in shaping our lives, from the best-selling author of The Bomber Mafia. Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won. Or should he have?

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....
