Story
While governments and private donors funnel money into majority White schools, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), and other institutions that have high enrollments of Black students, are struggling to survive, with state legislatures siphoning away federal funds that are legally owed to these schools. In The State Must Provide, Adam Harris reckons with the history of a higher education system that has systematically excluded Black people from its benefits.

An important book for an important time in America
Reviewed: 08-20-21
As a graduate of 2 HCBUs, I personally know the struggles these institutions have overcome to develop leaders who have helped our country to thrive. This book reviews the story of how amateur and the national governments have continously failed to adequately fund and support these colleges because of vestiges of Jim Crow segregation. We need to hear and act upon the truth.

Two half sisters, Effia and Esi, unknown to each other, are born into different villages in 18th-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and will live in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle, raising children who will be sent abroad to be educated before returning to the Gold Coast to serve as administrators of the empire.
