Борис Шергин — фольклорист и сказочник, который не нуждается в представлении. Его сказки широко известны, в том числе и благодаря мультфильмам "Волшебное кольцо" (1979), блестяще озвученному Евгением Леоновым, и "Шиш" (2006) в не менее талантливой озвучке Нины Усатовой.
Тексты сказок заново сверены по первым публикациям и рукописям, из них устранены следы наслоений "сглаживающей" редактуры. Сказка "Волшебное кольцо" приводится в малоизвестной авторской версии "Ванька доброй".
