Фантастическая история про пионера Вольку, выловившего из Москвы-реки странный кувшин и выпустившего из многовекового заточения доброго джинна впервые была опубликована в 1938 году в журнале Пионер. Первое книжное издание появилось двумя годами позже, в 1940 году. В 1956 году Геннадий Казанский снял одноименный фильм, после его выхода на экраны популярность сказки возросла в разы. Книга была переведена более чем на 50 иностранных языков, а ее общий тираж превысил миллион экземпляров.
