 貧困に苦しむお末の家では立て続けに４つも葬式を出した。家族のために働くお末だが、
家族からの冷たい仕打ちに耐え切れず…

その年（大正2年）、お末の家では4月から6月までに4人の葬式を出した。
最初に死んだのが長く患っていた父で、次が気力も体力もない19歳の次兄である。
お末は14歳の少女で、お末の家は小さな床屋で生計を立てていた。
そこは、札幌の豊平川に近い貧民窟と呼ばれている貧しい地域で、お末の家も楽な暮らしではなかったが、
父の亡くなった後は、長兄が家族をまとめながら懸命に働いていた。弱い者の立場から物語を描く有島らしい名作。


有島 武郎（ありしま たけお、1878年（明治11年）3月4日 - 1923年（大正12年）6月9日）は、日本の小説家。
学習院中等科卒業後、農学者を志して北海道の札幌農学校に進学、洗礼を受ける。
1903年に渡米し、ハバフォード大学大学院を経て、ハーバード大学で1年ほど歴史や経済学を学ぶ。帰国後、志賀直哉や武者小路実篤らと共に同人「白樺」に参加。
1923年、軽井沢の別荘（浄月荘）で波多野秋子と心中した。
代表作に『カインの末裔』『或る女』や、評論『惜しみなく愛は奪ふ』がある。©2022 panrolling Asian World Literature
