アンドリュー・ラング(1844-1912)はイギリス生まれの作家、文学者、民族学者です。童話や神話に精通しているラングが、子どもたちに本当に読んで欲しい選りすぐりのお話を各国から集めて、全12冊からなる童話集となりました。

「動物の音楽隊」
昔あるところに一匹のロバがいました。若い頃は主人である男の言うことを聞きいて、よく働いていました。けれども、年を取って働けなると、飼い主に殺されそうになりました。慌てて逃げ出したロバは、同じように年を取って狩りが出来なくなった犬と、ネズミを捕れなくなった猫に出会いました。さらには明日ご馳走に出されてしまう鶏も仲間にして、一緒に音楽隊をやることになりました。音楽隊の三匹と一羽は森で眠っていましたが、その森に一軒の家を見つけて宿を借りようとしました。ですが、その家は悪い泥棒の家だったのです。
「透明な王子さま」
昔あるところに自然の力を操る妖精がいました。妖精には4人の息子がいました。上の三人の息子に自分の力をわけ、それぞれを王様にしました。残った一番下の息子は、風の王子です。ある日、妖精が用事で外に出掛けた隙に、風の王子は城を抜けだして、そのまま隣の国の城まで飛んで行きました。その城で美しい姫にひと目惚れした風の王子は、姫を風に乗せて連れ去ってしまいました。娘を失って悲しんでいた王様はある日、金の島の王子に出会いました。金の島の王子は魔法の小石を持っていて、この小石を口に入れると、透明人間になれる不思議な力がありました。王子は世界中を歩き回って姫を探しましたが……
