アンドリュー・ラング(1844-1912)はイギリス生まれの作家、文学者、民族学者です。童話や神話に精通しているラングが、子どもたちに本当に読んで欲しい選りすぐりのお話を各国から集めて、全12冊からなる童話集となりました。
「ロク島のグロアーク」
昔、ラニクリスという村に、ホアルンという青年とベラという娘がいました。子供の頃から仲の良かった二人は、母親同士が「大きくなったら二人は結婚するわね」と常々言っていたほどでした。
しかし、不幸な事故があって、二人の母親は一度に亡くなってしまい、ホアルンとベラは暮らしていくために同じ屋敷の召使になりました。しかし、働いていても、なかなか稼ぎが増えることもなく、二人の結婚もままなりません。
ある日、ホアルンはお金を稼ぐために旅立ちましたが、その旅先で「ロク島のグロアーク」という大金持ちの妖精の噂を聞きました。しかし、今までグロアークの財産を狙って旅立った男たちは沢山いましたが、誰一人として帰って来たものはいないそうなのです。
それでもホアルンは、グロアークに会うためにロク島へ旅立つのでした……
「人のいいだんなたち」
むかし、一人の若者が農家の娘を好きになり、娘もまた若者を好いていたので、二人は結婚して、娘の両親と一緒に暮らし始めました。
ある日娘は、馬小屋の天井に重い荷鞍が吊り下げてあったのを見て、
「もしも今、あの荷鞍が落ちてきたら、私はぺちゃんこになって死んでしまう」
と、恐ろしさのあまりその場にしゃがみ込んで泣いてしまいました。
娘がなかなか帰って来ないので、おかみさんも馬小屋へ行きましたが、その理由を聞いたおかみさんもまた、娘を心配して一緒にわんわん泣き出してしまったのです。そして、同じく二人を心配して馬小屋へ向かった父親も、泣き出してしまって、帰って来ませんでした。
そうこうしているうちに日が暮れて、三人を待っていた若者は仕方なく家に帰りましたが、三人は揃って馬小屋で泣いていたのです。
その理由を聞いた若者はあきれてしまって、その翌朝に、
「さよなら。あんたたちと同じくらい間抜けな人間が、あと三人いたら戻ってくるよ」
と言うと、家を出て行ってしまったのですが……
