スイス生まれの作家。1827年、開業医の父と宗教詩人の母の間に、7人きょうだいの4番目として生まれる。病院を兼ねた自宅には、家族以外に入院患者たちもいた。幼少時に、スイス東部にあるクールの周りで幾度か夏を過ごし、そこでの体験が小説に活かされている。14歳の時、語学と音楽の勉強のためにチューリヒへ、17歳の時にはフランス語習得のために留学。代表作である『アルプスの少女ハイジ』は、1880年に第1部「ハイジの修業時代と遍歴時代」を匿名で出版。翌年に続編「ハイジは習ったことを使うことができる」を実名で出版。
