オペラ座は怪人の話で持ちきりでした。黒い服を着た怪人のすがたを見た人が多いのです。
怪人の様子はふつうではありませんでした。ともなくあらわれ、すぐに消えてしまうのです。
この日、オペラ座でおこなわれた特別こうえんでは、新しいスターがたんじょうしました。バレリーナのクリスティーヌ・ダーエです。
クリスティーヌはこれまでわき役のひとりにすぎませんでした。それなのにこの日、なぜか急にうまくなりました。
それから、オペラ座に新しい支配人が二人やってきました。かれらは、怪人のうわさ話を信じていませんでした。
ところが、『ファウスト』のこうえんの朝、支配人のところへ怪人から手紙がとどいたのです。その内容は五番ボックス席をわたしに自由に使わせること。クリスティーヌを主人公のマルガレーテ役とし、かのじょに歌わせることなどが書かれていました。
しかし、支配人は怪人のおどしには負けず、要求を聞き入れませんでした。
今夜のこうえんは大成功にまちがいないと思われたそのとき、天井にかけられた大きなシャンデリアが、一階席の真ん中へ落ちました。ガシャーン!という大きな音に続いて、オペラ座の場内にひめいがひびきわたります。

パリに生まれ、パリ大学を卒業。その後新聞記者として活躍する中、「マタン」紙に小説を連載することになる。新聞社を退職した後は、作家として人気を博す。
オペラ座を訪問した際に奇妙な噂話を聞き、『オペラ座の怪人』を執筆。イギリス、アメリカの新聞に連載、また、映画、ミュージカルにもなり世界で人気のある作品となる。
