「私」は事情を一通り話す代わりに、他の人へ漏らさないことを約束する。なぜなら、命に関わる重大な問題だからだ。院長は秘密を漏らしてたら商売にならないと話した。
「私」は淡々と事実を語り出す。殺人犯の前科者であること。破獄逃亡の大罪人であること。婦女を誘拐した愚劣漢。二重結婚までした破廉恥極まる人非人。
院長はその事実に思わず笑ってしまう。現在は、北海道の炭坑王と呼ばれていた谷山家の養嗣子・秀麿。
「私」は大正x年の夏の初めに原因不明の仮死状態に陥っていた。北海道の石狩川の上流から大雨に流されてきた。行き着いた先が炭坑王谷山家の別荘だったのだ。
そこに滞在していた小樽タイムスの記者の介抱を受けてやっと息を吹き返した。しかし、仮死状態から蘇生した「私」は記憶を失っていた。
それから、記者の仲介により炭坑王・谷山家の一粒種の女主人公である龍代と結婚し養子に納まる。その後、谷山家の財政が炭界不況と支配人の不正行為のために、危機的状況に陥っていた。
谷山家の財政を回復させた「私」は充実した日々を過ごしていた。間も無く、長男の龍太郎が生まれた一年と経たないうちのこと。妻の龍代が自殺を遂げてしまう。
次々と話が展開していく中で徐々に「私」という人間が見えてくる。一体「私」とは誰なのだろうか?衝撃の結末とは?
