 勤め人となり2年半。やっぱりマリコは忙しい。三が日は大手町へゆき、沿道から駅伝の応援だ。4年ぶりの出場となった日大へ向け学生たちと校歌を歌ううち、アンカーが目の前に。声を揃えてその名を叫べば、思わず目頭が熱くなる。ああ、若いというのはこういうことなんだ。
かくいうマリコ、今年古希を迎えるのである。還暦の時はよかった。まだイケるじゃん、内心そう思っていた。だが、70なのである。あくせく働くのはやめようか、年金をもらってなんとか暮らしていくか。誕生日を前に、マリコの心は千々に乱れる。
がーー。編集者たちとの会で思わぬサプライズが。お手製”マリコ・フラッグ”振り振り、某ミュージシャンの演奏にあわせたバースデーソングの合唱に、マリコ、思わずまたホロリ。勤め人となってから、まったく小説を書けていなかった。それでも期待してくれる人がいる。もうひと頑張り、書かなきゃ。理事長仕事の傍ら、長い休みには原稿用紙に向かう。長年の習性とは不思議なもので、ブランクもなんのその、すらすら書ける! 嬉しかったなあ。
