北海道北見市にある図書館で講演会を依頼された小説家の春諏訪石句。彼は志賀直哉の短編「網走まで」に登場する子連れの女が気になり、上野から北見まで彼女たちと同じ経路でやってくる。当時の交通事情を考えると親子の旅路は極めて困難で、架空の登場人物とはいえ、志賀直哉の創作によって過酷な旅をすることになった親子を不憫に思う。「かわいそうな女性を慰めてやりつつ、なんとか小説にしてやれないものか」。そして、講演会翌日、春諏訪は親子の旅の到着点「網走」まで歩いて向かうのだが――。
