ここで言うインテリジェンス組織とは、国の安全保障のために情報を収集・分析する情報機関のことで、彼らは諜報機関でありながら、同時に相手陣営を惑わしたり誘導したりする秘密工作機関でもある。
自国民を監視・弾圧する独裁国家では、しばしば恐怖の「秘密警察」の顔も持つ。
こうした組織の活動は非公開が原則なので、あまり日々のニュースでは報じられないが、現代の国際政治では非常に重要な役割を担っている。
こうしたインテリジェンス組織の仕組みとウラの活動に目を向け、国際報道で漏れ伝わる関連情報を繋ぎ合わせることで、現代国際政治の深層の一端に迫ってみたいというのが、本書をとりまとめた目的だ。
情報戦という言葉自体はよく聞くが、現実の国際紛争で実際のところ、それはどうなっているのか。具体的な紛争の局面での動きを追ってみようと思う。(はじめにより)

帰国後、月刊『軍事研究』記者、『ワールド・インテリジェンス』編集長などを経て軍事ジャーナリストに。
