市九郎は主人である旗本の中川三郎兵衛の寵妾お弓と密通し、手討ちになるところを逆に三郎兵衛を斬ってしまい、お弓と共に逃亡し、お弓に唆されて昼は茶屋を開き、夜は強盗を生業として生きた。
江戸から出て三年目、市九郎は遂に自分の罪に耐えきれなくなり、お弓の元を逃げ出し、美濃国の浄願寺に駆け込んで出家した。
市九郎は法名を了海とし、仏道修行に励み、罪を償う為、諸人救済の大願を起し、諸国雲水の旅に出る。
豊前の国に入ると市九郎は樋田の鎖渡しという難所で命を落とした馬子の姿を見た。
