 沙悟浄が三蔵法師一向に出会うまで

中国古典『西遊記』に登場する沙悟浄を主役に据えた、中島敦の描く物語。
自分とは何かを知りたがる変わった妖怪であった沙悟浄は、様々な賢人のもとを訪れ教えを請う。
しかし誰からも納得する教えは授かれなかった。
疲労に倒れた沙悟浄の前に、夢か現か、観音菩薩とその弟子が現れる。

中島敦（なかじま・あつし）
昭和時代前期の小説家。1909年東京生れ。東大国文科卒。
祖父は漢学者中島撫山、伯父にも漢学者が多く、父は中学の漢文教師。
1933年横浜高等女学校の教師となり、かたわら作家を志して習作にはげんだ。
持病の喘息悪化のため、転地療養を兼ねて41年パラオの南洋庁に赴任する。
唐代の伝奇「人虎伝」を素材にした「山月記」が深田久弥の推挽で42年2月の「文学界」に掲載され文壇にデビュー。同年5月発表の《光と風と夢》も好評で以後創作に専念。
パラオ南洋庁書記の職を辞して作家生活に入ろうとしたが、同年12月持病の喘息のために夭折した。代表作に「李陵(りりょう)」「弟子」「光と風と夢」など。©2022 PanRolling Historical Fiction World Literature
