明治以降の近代化で、「国家総動員」の精神的装置となった「神道」。近年、「右傾化」とも言われる流れの中で、「日本会議」に象徴されるような「国家」の装置として「神道」を取り戻そうとする勢力も生まれている。
では、そもそも神道とは何か。
神道は古来より天皇とともにあった。神道は古代におけるその成り立ちより「宗教性」と「国家」を伴い、中心に「天皇」の存在を考えずには語れない。
しかし「神道」および日本の宗教は、その誕生以降「神仏習合」の長い歴史も持っている。いわば土着的なもの、アニミズム的なものに拡張していった。そのうえで神祇信仰が有力だった中世から、近世になると神道が自立していく傾向が目立ち、明治維新期、ついに神道はそのあり方を大きく変えていく。「国家神道」が古代律令制以来、社会にふたたび登場する。神聖天皇崇敬のシステムを社会に埋め込み、戦争へ向かっていく。
