 源氏、１８歳の時。
瘧病（わらわやみ）にかかった源氏は、加持のために北山を訪れた。
加持の合間、北山を散策する源氏が見つけたのは、少女は雀の子に逃げられたのを嘆く、まだ幼い少女だった。 源氏は、その少女の中に藤壺女御の面影を見出し、結婚を申し込む。 だが、少女の祖母の尼君は、少女がまだ幼すぎるのを理由に、断るのである。

ある日、藤壺の宮が体調を崩し、里帰りをした。
源氏はこの機を逃してはと、侍女の王命婦に手引きを迫り、一夜の逢瀬を果たす。 しかしその後は、幾度送る手紙も取り合ってもらえず、悲しみに暮れる。 そんな中、藤壺の宮は妊娠し、源氏は夢見によってその子が、源氏と藤壺の宮の子であることを知る。

そして、藤壺の宮恋しさに日々暮らす秋の終わりごろ、あの北山の尼君と少女が京にもどって来ていることを知り、源氏は早速訪ねていくのであった。(C)2011　オトバンク Literature & Fiction
