 明治・大正期の文学者、森鴎外の代表的な短編小説作品。本作が森鴎外の処女小説である。初出は「国民之友」［1890年（明治23年）］。初期の代表作であり、1884年から5年間のドイツ留学時の体験を下敷きにして書かれた。主人公、太田豊太郎はエリート官吏である。彼はドイツ留学中に舞姫エリスと出会い、二人で暮らし始める。しかし、そのことによって周囲から中傷され官職を辞することになる。やがて、豊太郎は、前途を案じる友人からの勧めに応じて、エリスとの別れを決意。事情を知り発狂した身重のエリスを残し、豊太郎は日本へと帰国する。近代文学の代表的なロマンチシズム溢れる作品である。Public Domain (P) 2015 Audible, Inc.
