愛犬を連れて散歩の途中、気まぐれに普段行かない小道に入ってみた。そこは不思議な異境にとつながっていた。
愛犬のフラテを連れて「私」はいつものように散歩をしていたが、犬の案内にまかせて気まぐれに蹄鍛冶屋の横道に入ってみた。
そこはまだ一度も行ったことのない細道だった。その細道はだらだらの坂道でときどきひどく曲がりくねっている。
かなり高いところまで登った私は、雑木林をみつけそこへ入ってみた。林の中を入っていくと、西洋風の家が一軒建っていた。
どうしてこんなところにあるのかわからなかったが、興味をそそられ、中に入ってみることにした。中には誰もおらず、一匹の西班牙（スペイン）犬が床に顎をくっつけて居眠りしていたが、私の入るのを見てずるそうにそっと目を開けて、のっそり起上った。
