 ジョバンニは、お父さんが漁に行ったまま帰らず、お母さんが病床にあるため、苦しかった家計を支えるために活版所で働いていた。

小学校の同級生から、父親がいないことを理由にいじめられていたが、幼なじみのカムパネルラだけは、ジョバンニに優しかった。

ケンタウル祭の夜、ジョバンニはお母さんのために牛乳を取りに行くが、その途中でいじめっ子達に会う。お父さんのことをからかわれ、一人落ち込んで、丘に寝転ぶジョバンニ。

気がつくと、ジョバンニはカムパネルラと一緒に、銀河鉄道に乗っていた。二人の旅が始まったのである。
