江戸時代中期~後期の国学者、浮世草子・読本作者。通称、東作 (藤作) 。俳号、漁焉 、無腸。浮世草子の筆名、和訳太郎。読本などの筆名、剪枝畸人。その他余斎,三余斎,鶉居,鶉廼家などを筆名として名乗る。初め俳諧を学び、30歳前後から和歌,国学に志し,加藤宇万伎の門に入りました。一方では浮世草子『諸道聴耳世間猿』、『世間妾形気』を発表。明和5年読本『雨月物語』を著わし、安永5 年刊行。安永1年には生活のために医者となり、そのかたわら国学にうちこみ、本居宣長との論争を展開。その他の著書に『癇癖談』、『金砂』、『藤簍冊子』『春雨物語』『胆大小心録』など。
