 大衆文学者として活躍した山本周五郎による短編小説。初出は「面白倶楽部」[光文社、1952（昭和27）年3月～4月号]。
映画化されたことで有名な『雨あがる』の続編。

浪人三沢伊兵衛の妻おたよが旅先で倒れてしまう。療養費を稼ぐために荷物運びの仕事をしていたところ、槍術家の小室青岳の目に留まり――。

＜山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろう）＞
1903年、山梨県生まれ。横浜市の西前小学校卒業後、東京木挽町の山本周五郎商店に徒弟として住み込む。1926年『須磨寺附近』が「文藝春秋」に掲載され、文壇デビュー作となった。『日本婦道記』が1943年上期の直木賞に推されたが、受賞を辞退。1967年2月14日没。享年63歳。Public Domain (P)Roundemy Co., Ltd. Asian World Literature
