 太宰治の初期の名作

人里離れた山奥で、ある親子が二人で暮らしていた。
父は炭焼きを生業とし、娘・スワは滝つぼのわきの茶店で店番をしている。
十五歳にもなるスワは父へ反抗的な口をきくようになったが、父はそれを見て一人前になってきたのだと感じるのであった。

冬が近づき、父は炭を売りに村へ出かける。
高く売れると決まって酒を飲んで帰り、たまにスワへお土産も買ってきてくれていた。
そんなある日、父の帰りを待ちくたびれ寝てしまっていたスワは、小屋の入り口から何かが覗いていることに気づく。

太宰治（だざい・おさむ）
津軽の大地主の六男として生まれる。
共産主義運動から脱落して遺書のつもりで書いた第一創作集のタイトルは「晩年」（昭和11年）
という。この時、太宰は27歳だった。
その後太平洋戦争に向う時期から戦争末期までの困難な間も妥協を許さない
創作活動を続けた数少ない作家の一人である。
戦後「斜陽」（昭和22年）は大きな反響を呼び、若い読者をひきつけた。
