Publisher's summary

Throughout his baseball career and life Christy Mathewson often wrote down his observations and philosophies. The most famous collection of these writings was published by John N. Wheeler in the classic baseball book Pitching in a Pinch. He was asked many times to write an autobiography yet never completed one. This book is a compilation of many of those writings not included in Pitching in a Pinch and completes, with that book and the brand new Managing in a Moment (writings of Mathewson 1916-18 while manager of the Cincinnati Reds), a marvelous and fascinating trilogy of Matty's nonfiction writings.

This book includes several personal letters and thoughts as well as obscure interviews and articles attributed to Mathewson and likely helped along by Jack Wheeler. You will marvel as the past jumps to the presents and names long forgotten bring back the grand old days of the Dead Ball Era. Mathewson was the first to ever put his name to a column and to endorse products. He was universally adored and was the most famous person in the United States in the first two decades of the 20th century. We hope you will enjoy this volume as well as the entire Mathewson Foundation collection of The Matty Books. This is volume 1 of a three volume work. Researched, transcribed, and edited by Eddie Frierson.

Fascinating time capsule ....

This audiobook is a fascinating time capsule for anyone interested in the 1900-1914 history of the national pastime. It includes articles, interviews and columns of the great Christy Mathewson. To hear the rundowns of the world's series contests of 1911 and 1912 and to follow the season pennant races is seeming real time through 1913, the players and characters of the game come alive. This is a way to live through seasons gone by and to feel as if you "know" the players that fought for the right to be called World's Champions. At the same time there are sprinkled in bonus articles that are more in the vein of PITCHING IN A PINCH with observations of how to play the game or interesting stories of the early days. Mathewson was prolific in his writing (along with sportswriter John N. Wheeler - to whom he dictated the stories that he did not type out himself). I loved this book and also recommend MANAGING IN A MOMENT which is the collection of Matty writings during his years as manager of the Cincinnati Reds. I cannot wait for the other two volumes of this book to be released! PLAY BALL!
