About this listen

This presentation features an exclusive special introduction by James Patterson.

Master of suspense James Patterson continues the Women's Murder Club series with this sequel to 1st to Die.

The sensational killings that have rocked San Francisco appear to be unrelated except in their brutality. But detective Lindsay Boxer senses there's some thread connecting them all. She calls her friends in the Women's Murder Club together to see if they can discover what it is.

Working with Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas, Assistant District Attorney Jill Bernhardt, and medical examiner Claire Washburn, Lindsay discovers that there is indeed a link. Each of the victims had a close relative in a particular profession, a profession that sends a chill through Lindsay's heart.

The partners in the Women's Murder Club deduce where the killer is likely to strike next and bait a trap that can't be resisted. But if their calculation is wrong, the consequences will be lethal. And there will be no second chance.

Needs a different Narrator

First to Die was an excellent "read" with a terrific narrator. This story was good, but the narrator detracted from the story. If time permits, read the book and skip this audio.

Be Patient

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The first 4-5 chapters are almost painful to listen to. The reader doesn't do a very good job, However, if you are able to hold on until the sixth or seventh chapters she gets better.

She still misses the mark a bit, however there is improvment. The reader sounds excited when the character is described as calm and calm when the character should clearly be excited or alarmed. It seems that she emphasized the wrong places.

She made the lead characters seem whiny and weak. The voices she created for the characters changed to some degree throughout the book so it was a bit confusing.

She did not seem to know the story or the material prior to hitting the record button.

If this reader were reading the rest of the series, I would not choose to listen. However, since this appears to be the only one in the series that she reads, I will conitue to listen.

Any additional comments?

The story it pretty good. If you have a chance to read this one on your own, instead of the audible version, I would recommend it.

2nd chance?

I was looking for another author to read. My wife really likes Patterson's work. I thought why not. Well I listened to the first book then I took a chance on Patterson a second time. I am not sure I will give this series a third chance. Seemed to me a lot of repetition. Also a lack of continuity, she could have picked the guy up on a parole violation but nope she doesn't use that. A quick no brainer read. Don't go on my word alone give this book a shot then make up your own mind.

Great storline

Would you consider the audio edition of 2nd Chance to be better than the print version?

Yes because important keys to the storline are emphasized by their voice tones. Reading the text you might miss.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 2nd Chance?

The last couple of chapters when Lindsey and serial killer were confronted!

What does Melissa Leo and Jeremy Piven bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Melissa was very good, but I loved the masculine voice of Jeremy...he really sounded like a psycho serial killer.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The entire book moved me.

Any additional comments?

Great read as usual....or should I say great listen...LOL!!!!

Twists and Intrigue till the end

This book was full of twists throughout it. The author continued to catch your attention with new layers to the plot. Very hard to put down.

Another great read in this series!

Narrating was awful, but luckily the plots were so interesting that I could ignore it. I highly recommend starting at #1 and keep going.

Hard to follow

The book was great. the fact that the chapters aren't labeled properly was really annoying. it's hard to follow where you are if you forget where you leave off especially.

Liked the story

Liked the story but narrator was awful. I’ll make sure to avoid anything read by her again. No emotion at all.

2nd Chance caught my attention

...but did not hold it. I become angry with characters when they do stupid things. And lately my chosen authors have sent characters into stupid situations. I'm switching to male protagonists in mysteries to see if they have become stupid too. Sorry Patterson fans!
