About this listen

“It’s possible simply to go through life noticing things and writing them down and that this is OK, it’s worth doing... the seemingly insignificant things that most of us spend our days noticing are really significant, have meaning, and tell us something.” – Joan Didion

This is not just another list-of-writing-prompts-book because Carolyn V. Hamilton has included personal stories to inspire you to be ruthlessly hones with yourself.

And she has done so honestly, openly, and with no holds barred. Just as she encourages you to do.

WARNING: Sharing your personal thoughts with yourself in a written format can lead to unbridled self-exploration and self-knowledge.

Carolyn V. Hamilton’s goal has been to provide you with lots of often odd and unusual things to think about when you sit down to write your memoir or to write in your daily journal.

Your emotional reactions to Carolyn’s personal stories may give you some new insight into yourself, and how you prefer to tell your stories. Her memoir students and clients often tell her that it’s not easy, or not always preferable, to be blunt and raw.

In this book you’ll find intriguing story prompt titles like, “What Mom Said”, “Eavesdropping”, “The Tsunami Wedding”, “That Foul Smell”, “Close Encounters of the Police Kind”, and “Stung, Bitten, Ravaged.”

If you are writing a memoir, these prompts can give you some ideas for something to write when you are “stuck.” And that piece may well find its way into the big picture of your story.

From the author of The 5 Important Parts of a Successful Memoir & Why You Need Them and Power Editing For Memoir Writers, this comprehensive book will spark your inspiration and immediately unleash your creativity.

It may also help you to deep-dive into yourself and discover daring and daunting epiphanies.

“We never know what will inspire a writer who’s stuck. Your book contains much more than I’ve seen anywhere, and you aren’t afraid to put potentially embarrassing things in it. My hat is off to you! “ – author Patti McMann

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR:
How did you come to write this book for memoir and journal writers?
We need to talk about the writing process. We learn by doing, doing the homework to prepare yourself. Not just learning grammar and punctuation, but reading books about the memoir genre and, reading other memoirs. I want 99 Writing Prompts to be a trigger for bigger things in a writer’s life.

What other books have you written for memoir writers?
Right now I have 4 other books specifically to help memoir writers get organized and tell their stories:
Power Editing For Memoir Writers
The 5 Important Parts of a Successful Memoir & Why You Need Them
The Big Red Power Pen Editing System: Kill These 24 Words
Throw Up Your Emotions on Paper: A Workbook Planner of 21 Challenges to Help You Learn to Write About Emotions in Your Memoir in 21 days

What do you think makes a good memoir?
Great stories are character-driven. So, naturally a memoir has great potential because we are all unique human beings with a great variety individual experiences. We are great “characters.” Add to that strong motivation and conflict, especially emotionally.
