Publisher's summary

Beginning in the broken aftermath of the First World War and the Treaty of Versailles, which made German recovery almost impossible, Whittock tells not just the account of the men who rose to the fore in the dangerous days of the Weimar republic, circling around the cult of personality generated by Adolf Hitler, but also a convincing and personality-driven overview of how ordinary Germans became seduced by the dreams of a new world order, the Third Reich. The book also gives a fascinating insight into the everyday life in Germany during the Second World War and explores key questions such as how much did the Germans know about the Holocaust and why did the regime eventually fail so disastrously?

Reminder of an evil regime!

This is a concise survey of Hitler’s dictatorship, I think this book as a teaser and if interested in more details please read the Richard Evans’ brilliant account of the Nazi Germany, it’s rise and demise. As the author of this book frequently refers Evans set “The Third Reich” is the definitive history but this book serves as an outline for the significant events throughout the era of Nazis in Germany without getting into much details. It is also at good reminder of what United States may face in the near future if an authoritarian white nationalist (fascist) is elected in office. Lessons should be learned indeed.

Brief but thorough

For me it had plenty of detail and documentation and storyline to explain "how could this happen. Loved the narration as well.

Excellent of Hitler and the Nazis, but…

This is an excellent concise history of the rise and fall of Hitler and the Nazis. However, be prepared… the author seeks to downplay the United States’ involvement in the war. He left me with the impression that World War II was basically between Germany and Russia. And, Russia won the war.
Of course, I think history disagrees with the author… additionally, the oddly anti-American comments didn’t seem to add anything to the book. Overall, the book was Good. But for an American, meh. My grandfather was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained while building a pontoon bridge across the Rhine at Remagen… I guess he was just helping the Russians.
