About this listen

A coastal fishing lad, by an act of heroism, secures the interest of a ship-owner, who places him as midshipman on board one of his ships. In company with two of his fellows, Jack is left behind, at Alexandria, in the hands of the revolted Egyptian troops, and is present through the bombardment and the scenes of riot and blood-shed which accompany it. His adventures continue aboard the Wild Wave, when they meet one of the fiercest hurricanes enroute to Calcutta. Will Jack and his friends survive?

Worst Reading Ever

This is quite possibly the worst audio book reading in history. I love G. A. Henty's books. I want my sons to read all of them, for the rich historical content as well as for the noble, chivalrous, and courageous young male protagonists--fantastic role models. I gave this two stars because I really appreciate any effort to make more of Henty's books available in audio. However, I was (barely) able to make it through one other short book by the same reader, and I haven't been able to make it through even 5 minutes of this one. The reading is simply terrible. The recording quality is poor, but that would be no big deal if the reader were at all good. I will try to describe, but you will just need to listen to the sample. The voice sounds pinched, clipped, and strange. The inflection falls the same way in each phrase--it is incredibly irritating. There is absolutely no effort given to differentiate characters or voices (which might be an improvement over some male readers' painful attempt to do women's voices, or accents) but there wasn't even any different inflection given to what the characters say or to what is happening in the story. Life threatening action scenes, tender romantic scenes, historical descriptions, and everything else are all read in exactly the same grating, dull, monotonous tone. I feel bad to be so harsh because I appreciate the effort. However, even my children, who are used to me listening to audio books around the house, can't listen to more than 5 seconds of this reader without mocking him mercilessly and begging me to turn it off. Alas, it is just that bad.
