Unique Story
Mr. Masseurs delivers a splendid debut thriller with fantasy, horror, and psychological mystery overtones. Michael wakes up Sunday morning at the beach house his family is visiting. Surprisingly, his wife and daughter are already up and gone with no note. He tosses it off and takes his morning run, curious why he’s not seeing any people out and about. Michael realizes he is alone but decides to wait, hoping his family will return. Shops, gas stations, car dealerships, etc., are open, but no one is there.
Focusing on survival, he goes through a series of flying high, happy, depressed, missing his family, and taking up new hobbies to stay engaged. He looks for his wife and daughter everywhere, not understanding how this could occur. He discovers a young girl who reminds him of his daughter, but this world is unsafe. Something unseen is close by, especially at night. Michael holds on dearly to the familiar with references to his family during internal conversations.
A Day In The Life makes one think about what they might do if they awoke alone in a familiar place, like their home. The character development of Michael is superb, with his emotional upheaval, determination, tenacity, and love relatable. When pushed to the very end of his senses, he makes a choice that many people might question.
The audio rendition by David Piper was outstanding. He delivers consistent, intense emotion and brings Michael's internal torment to life. There were no issues with the audiobook quality other than it ended perfectly but too soon.
