On 21 June 1922, Count Alexander Rostov - recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt - is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol.

Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely. But instead of his usual suite, he must now live in an attic room while Russia undergoes decades of tumultuous upheaval.

Can a life without luxury be the richest of all?

Engaging from start to finish

From the very beginning kept me captive. Resulted in absolutely unexpected finale.
As a Russian myself, find it very really relevant both from historical perspective and today’s events

Top 3 Books of the Year

How satisfying to listen to such a well written tale. Classy, literate and compassionate mini stories mingle amongst what we’re dreadful days of history in Russia. At times, I’m sure I heard the tinkle of cutlery, glass and an orchestra.
Can hardly wait to see the film currently being made starring Ewan McGregor as the Count. I do feel some regret that Kenneth Branagh declined the role. Maybe it was one two many times to be laboured with large moustaches.

Magnificent!

The writing is beautiful, the characters compelling, and the story is well-paced. “For it is finally only our heartbreak that refutes everything that is ephemeral in love.”
The narrator did a superb job: expressive and yet as efficient and discrete as a concierge of the Hotel Metropol

If you like The Martian

This book is written very much along the lines of the 2015 film with Matt Damon, The Martian, in that it is one key character who is under house arrest in an exclusive Russian hotel at the time of the introduction of communism. There is lots of self talk, self reflection, dissection of seconds, hours & minutes, musings & reflection on guests & staff. Unlike The Martian, there are other alliances & characters that make their appearances along the way. Overall, the story comes together eventually & is tied up in a bow at the end.

Wonderful narrative

Expertly written and read. A masterpiece that spans decades and gives insight into the Russian uprising and its effects on society as seen through the eyes of a true Russian gentleman.

An epic story foretold in a beautiful performance

I couldn’t get enough of this book! The performance was amazing and did the story justice. I couldn’t have read such a bold volume and enjoyed it as much as listening to it being told. The story of Alexander and his life experiences confined to the hotel during the Russian revolution and all the characters his story intertwines with takes one on a journey through history and time. Loved it!
