About this listen

"What is the matter with you? We do not need his money!" She stood behind him; her hands on her hips.

"It's not about the money." His voice was calm. He could have told her what day of the week it was with the same level of excitement.

"Then why? Why must you go back and try to get yourself killed? You have responsibilities here!"

Sam stopped brushing and seemed ready to turn and face her. He then thought better and did not. He returned to brushing the horse.

"Samuel, you turn around and face me! You tell me why I have to get ready to mourn a second man in my life. You tell me what I'm supposed to tell our children!"

His turn was powerful and deliberate; he faced her, "Our children, Laura? It wasn't that long ago you told me in no uncertain terms they were your children and I was a bad influence. You share them with me only when it suits you. They are our children if you think you can use them to your advantage."

"Is that why you're doing this? To punish me for what I said?"

"Laura, please. Do you really think that little of me? I gave the man my word. I promised him I would avenge him if this happened."

"You promised? You promised? You also promised my husband you would look after us. I know Wiggins was your friend, but he is cold and dead in the ground. There is nothing you can do that will change that."

Sam's brows furrowed, "And how is that different from William, your husband? Is he not also cold and dead in the ground?"

Laura stepped forward and took his free hand. She placed his hand on her chest, between her breasts, "Does this feel like it's cold and dead? Do you not feel the love that surges through my body with every beat of my heart? Tell me what I have to do to keep you here? What must I do to change your mind?"

Sam wondered, which was the higher calling; avenging a friend or being a father?

More than a western

Better than book 1.
The story line is excellent, in so many ways it is more than a western, more than a love story, more than a moral tale. It is a complete life story.
The descriptions are well written and often beautiful, the story telling is captivating. The editing is good.
The narration is strong and kept my interest.

True to the Era

I don't want to give anything away in this one so my review is going to sound a bit ambiguous. I would recommend this book but also caution that if you are looking to a light and fluffy read this book is not for you. It is true to the time period were survival and life expediencies aren't what they are today. I did enjoy the book but found parts of it hard to get through emotionally. I had not read the first book but I the author did a good job recapping enough of the story that I wasn't lost. There is some light bedroom content but he does leave the majority of it "behind closed doors." It was a good book and I will be looking for the next in the series.

Fantastic Followup

Excellent second book in the series! I was engaged from beginning to end. Love the characters even more and there were more than a few surprises!

Incredible trilogy

This guy can write a story . The characterization is his stories are precise , detailed and well thought out . You can see , hear , feel and touch the scenery ,the events , people and situations as they fly off the pages and into your life . Grab a pillow curl up on your couch and plan on staying for the long haul . Guarnetee you won’t want to be putting this trilogy down at any point along the way . Happy reading

Kwen Griffeth can tell a story.

I thoroughly enjoy a well told believable western. I thoroughly enjoy a well written story. Kwen Griffeth delivers! Not since the writings of William Johnstone have I enjoyed a western more. I've listened to the first two books of this series and will welcome more. The narrator has a nice delivery.

A Proper Western

If you didn't get a chance to read Book 1, no worries--the basic information is supplied; however, you will have missed some of the depth and nuances of Sam's character. Narrator Joseph Durika brings resonance and immediacy to author Kwen Griffith's words as you are drawn into the lives of the characters, struggling to put yourself into the 19th century's manners, mores, and hardships. Modern camping trips are usually more luxurious than was everyday life as a rancher in the "wild west." The story is engrossing and the ending an utter . . . surprise. I will say no more than to invite you to read or listen for yourself!
