Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. Awesome Traditional Fantasy
This debut fantasy novel by G.F. Allen had a great storyline. It reminds me of the old-school fantasy that made me fall in love with reading. There is no spice in this book, which makes it a great choice for younger readers, and I will be recommending it to my nephews. The author conveyed the story in a way that made me care about the characters. Our hero is relatable and flawed, which I found refreshing. There is a lot going on in this book as it is the first in the series, so there is world building, and you will learn about the unique magic system. That being said, following the plot was easy, and the descriptions were not too little nor too much. I am definitely ready for book 2 and look forward to meeting Dart and the group as they continue their journey and growth.
I have read reviews that state the prologue was lengthy. While I agree, I also feel like it is necessary to lay out the story and how we got to where we are now.
If you are a fan of traditional fantasy and enjoy story lines, magic, different worlds, and are ready for some fun, then definitely check this book out.

Amazing!
I was somewhere around 75% done with the audiobook when my wife overheard what was happening. She was so interested that we restarted and began to listen to it together.
An amazing story with interesting characters and a fantastical plot. I'm buying the physical copy for my wife's upcoming birthday, now - but like to think about one day owning a signed edition ;)

Better than A Game of Thrones
This was honestly everything I wanted A Game of Thrones to be. And I really enjoyed the narrator.

A fun listen
A Kingsguard Tale is wonderfully read and a strong start to a swords and magic fantasy series. Allen has solid writing and a intriguing world with a fun cast. The non-linear storytelling took me a little to adjust to, but fleshed out Dart's past and relationships nicely. If you are a fan of epic fantasy adventure, this would be a good listen for you.

Fantasy & Video Game Nostalgia
A Kingsguard Tale: Road to Celestia is on my top 5 books of this year. I can describe it as Final Fantasy 14 meets King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table. Imagine your favorite JRPG in book form.
This is the story of Dart Horowitz, after growing up hearing the tales of his grandfather's adventures, he starts dreaming of becoming a Kingsguard. After witnessing his village getting attacked, his dreams becomes stronger, not only to protect his loves ones, but also to protect the kingdom.
With that said, Dart is not your typical hero, all muscle and no brains or emotions. Dart is a knight carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, a mind full of dreams and his heart on his sleeve. You feel his happiness, weakness, sadness and you can even sense the humanity coming out of the pages. He learns from his mistakes, isn't afraid to admit when he fails and at times, he is a bit harsh on himself but never to the point of being annoying.
After he finally makes it into the Militia ranks, and proving his worth, he still fails to become a Kingsguard. This doesn't deter him and when the King entrusts him with the most important mission yet, he only has one goal in mind... Bring the Ancient One to Celestia no matter what. He is apprehensive at first, but he knows if he fails, the faith of his Kingdom and probably the world would be at stake.
He encounters dangerous adversaries of great strength called Infernals. Vile creatures with no sense of morale but a lot of sense of destruction. They want to abduct the Ancient One and prevent humans to defeat them and eradicate their race from existence.
Good thing Dart has an amazing team that will encourage, challenge and help him grow. The road has characters straight out of your favorite fantasy books and video games. You have Elise: the childhood friend, supportive and caring. Ava: the Last Ancient, a mix of innocence, resilience and hope. Butler: the Shifter, Ava's protector and the big brother of the team. Jack: the Kingsguard, Mentor, a noble with a heart of gold. Silver Fang: the strongest Kingsguard, cold and secluded but will risk his life for the good of others. Dale: the kooky helper, Jack of all trades. Maroone: the dark Mage with a conscience. Drakar: evilness personified and the one that can end it all.
Since I don't want to throw any spoilers... all I can say is: the book has action, mystery and an amazing plot that transports you to another Era where magic, summons, and Knights are the norm. If you like fantasy, adventure, mythology or if you are a nostalgic gamer circa 80s & 90s, this book is for you!
Steven Ragsdale performance was perfect for the feel of the book. His voice and intonation changes capture the feel of the story. I cannot wait for book 2!
DISCLAIMER: I was honored to receive the audiobook and hear some clips before release, but my opinion is totally my own. If I love an audio book, you’ll know it and if I don’t’ like it, I will be very clear about it. It’s that simple! Life is too short, and I want to enjoy it with books I love. I purchase the book and audiobook as well(yes, I bought it because I truly want to support the author and the story is awesome).
