About this listen

This is my 3rd novel in my “Life in Old-Time Florida” series. This book continues the story of early pioneering as told in “Three Day Trip” and “Edge of Existence.” It depicts the daily life of one entrepreneur and his combined family over a period of three decades. While the story is primarily fictional, many readers will recognize some of the names and places. While the timeline is not always totally accurate, it is compatible with the tales of real-life events and people told to me by my Dad, George Betts. His life was intertwined with many of the names and places that were used to bring this part of family life and history together. The story is set primarily in Manatee and Sarasota Counties in an era of rapid change. A few months from now, I will have lived 90 years in the areas described in this book. I pray that my own children and their offspring will find joy and inspiration in having something to hold and read that is splattered with a bit of “personal paint.” For all readers, I hope you will gain insight to the value of hard work and personal integrity. Finally, I hope Joe and all his offspring are seen as examples of those attributes and provide motivation for self-sufficiency in generations to come.
