About this listen

A wounded warrior and his younger brother discover the true meaning of Christmas in this timeless story of family bonds. A poignant continuation of the Lowcountry Summer series.

As far as 10-year-old Miller McClellan is concerned, it's the worst Christmas ever. His father's shrimp boat is docked, his mother is working two jobs, and with finances strained, Miller is told, they can't afford the dog he desperately wants. "Your brother's return from war is our family's gift," his parents tell him. But when Taylor returns with PTSD, family strains darken the holidays. Then Taylor's service dog arrives - a large black Labrador/Great Dane named Thor. His brother even got the dog!

When Miller goes out on Christmas Eve with his father's ax, determined to get his family the tree they can't afford, he takes the dog for company - but accidentally winds up lost in the wild forest. The splintered family must come together to rediscover their strengths, their family bond, and the true meaning of Christmas.

'A Christmas Carol' for 2016

Would you listen to A Lowcountry Christmas again? Why?

Yes, Monroe did a fine job with the narration of her novel. I can see myself reading this book (or listening) every Christmas season. It's a lovely story about a family facing the challenges of a new normal and finding the true meaning of Christmas.

What did you like best about this story?

The transformation of son Taylor when a dog named Thor comes into his life.

What does Mary Alice Monroe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I imagine she paced her narration the way she heard her characters when she wrote the novel. Not every author is the right narrator but I thought Monroe was for her novel.

If you could take any character from A Lowcountry Christmas out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I'd take Thor's trainer out to dinner. What she did was a great gift for one who has given so much. I'd like to learn more.

Any additional comments?

Recommended to anyone looking for good novel with a Christmas theme.

A bit over the top

The story was ok. Way too sentimental and maudlin for my taste, but I can see where others might like it. Wished a man had narrated...having the author read the male characters just didn't work.

The backstory of Taylor

Be aware that this isn’t a book about “the girls” but the story of Taylor and PTSD. It was another winner from the author

Insightful

Despite a few of the other reviews stating that they did not like the book because it was not based on the previous summer girls I found this book to be extremely heartwarming and had me all in my feelings. I laughed but I also cried at some of the scenes and thought that it was a great depiction of the life of the soldier with PTSD returning home from the war and readjusting to his now new life with his service dog.
