About this listen

Before his untimely death in 2004, Larry Brown was hailed as one of the world's greatest living writers. With A Miracle of Catfish, the unfinished but largely complete novel Brown left behind, listeners can once again savor his eloquent and unique style. This tale of fatherhood, alienation, and loneliness introduces readers to another set of Brown's irresistibly flawed characters.©2007 Larry Brown (P)2007 Recorded Books Action & Adventure Family Life Fiction Literary Fiction

Critic reviews

"A Miracle of Catfish is vintage Brown. It's driven by terse sentences, haunting images and a sense of place you can almost smell and taste . . . [and] filled with memorable characters....Brown was a writer who was never writerly. He was never self-consciously literary, yet created a literature that will last." (USA Today)
"The truth of the matter is that Brown is one of the best writers we have, able in a sentence or two to cut to the heart of things." (Washington Post Book World)

Fantastic

A collection of characters and situations that will stick with you. The scenes and prose range from hilarious to heartbreaking. I loved this book and the narrator made it even better.

Catch this one

one of the best stories I've listened to in a long time, the characters get under your skin, and you feel like your their neighbor.

What great view of the raw unpolished Larry Brown.

Catfish Miracle

Larry Brown's "Miracle" (edited and published posthumously by Shannon Ravenel) is just that. Readers will find Larry's final work, though not quite finished, continues in his style of gut-punching truth, pulled from the smoke and fog by Ravenel, and delivered in a tight package.

Wish he had gotten a chance to finish it

Headline says it all. I'm still not sure what the miracle in the title refers to, possibly used ironically. There are certainly no saints in this story, just the usual Larry Brown sad-sacks and screwups. You know, people like all of us. If ever someone wrote my biography, I'd want it to be Larry Brown.

Even unfinished

I loved reading this book the first time, and the second time, and hearing it read did not diminish the experience. If anything, listening to Larry Brown last and never finished novel revealed it's magic and message in a whole new way. I highly recommend this book.

FYI

Great story...holds your attention...and then NOTHING! I think you should know there is no ending and that, to me, was disruptive to the overall story! UGH!
