About this listen

Costa Award winner and Guardian Prize winning author Patrick Ness delivers an extraordinarily moving novel about coming to terms with loss.

The monster showed up after midnight. As they do. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming.... This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth.

A great story and a great narration, too!

The story is heartbreaking but incredibly honest. It's also beautifully written. It shows how different people deal with guilt and loss, and I was able to see a little bit of each character in me as well, which I always appreciate.

I loved the narrator too! The voice of the monster is really engaging, with a certain tenderness to it even when he's mad. Great rhythm and tone. A really enjoyable performance.

If you're looking for a quick but deep story, and don't mind the tears, go for it. It's totally worth it.

loved it as a kid, love it now

Personally, it doesn't hold up to the illustrated book but was incredible nonetheless. Made me cry on the way to work 10/10
