This book is about an idea - namely, that Scripture mandates a Jewish return to the historical region of Palestine - which in turn morphed into a political movement, rallied around a popular slogan ("A country without a nation for a nation without a country"), and eventually contributed to the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. Christian Zionism continues to influence global politics, especially US foreign policy, and has deeply affected Jewish-Christian and Muslim-Christian relations.

Donald M. Lewis seeks to provide a fair-minded, longitudinal study of this dynamic yet controversial movement as he traces its lineage from biblical sources through the Reformation to various movements of today. He explores Christian Zionism's interaction with other movements, forces, and discourses, especially in eschatological and political thought, and why it is now flourishing beyond the English-speaking world. Throughout, he demonstrates how it has helped British and American Protestants frame and shape their identity.

A Short History of Christian Zionism seeks to bring clarity and context to often-heated discussions.

Lewis presents a thorough overview of the people, movements and events that have contributed to modern Christian Zionism. The book is refreshingly free of polemical diatribe, simply presenting the facts. He provides important sources that have contributed to the movement’s growth as well as some recent voices of rebuttal. I came away with a much more complete understanding of the complexities and motivations of the Zionist story—exactly what I had hoped for from this book.

An even-handed history of events and theologies

Real eye opening experience, watch a ton of people speak on the topic as I listened. Rev 2:9

incredible

Even though this isn’t primarily a book about eschatology, I was impressed by his grasp and command of the many different eschatological views out there and how they connect and contribute to Christian Zionism.

Comprehensive

I went into this book thinking “ugghhhh this will be heavy” and it was, but so well written it was easy to consume. Learned so much that is helping to balance out earlier personal teachings.

Excellently done

Intelligently written, dispassionate survey of Christian Zionism. Very helpful for understanding current events. Excellent narration.

Comprehensive. Succinct.

Very important book for all, but especially for a modern Christian. It’s been confusing for me in the last 20 years or so to get a grasp on what I should believe in regard to support for Israel in my Christian life. This book provides a massive amount of background and current information on that topic. I liked that the book was very neutral on emotion. Talks directly to the subject matter. This isn’t an apology for Israeli actions nor an apology for Christian evangelicals and their beliefs. It’s a fact filled description of Christian Zionism and how it’s been developed over the years. I really enjoyed the book. A bit long but that’s a small matter.

Excellent book

I appreciated the pacing of the book, not getting lost in the weeds, and Lewis’s careful handling of aspects of the story that would tend to make your blood boil. Well done.

Very unbiased history of controversial topic
