About this listen
For decades, the Reverend Sammy Milton was a force in American politics.
An outspoken leader of the Religious Right, Milton divided his time between evangelizing the lost and galvanizing conservative voters. His rhetoric was polarizing, his positions were divisive, and he garnered many enemies over the years. When news outlets carried word of his death, many openly expressed joy at his passing.
Scott Addison was a product of his time.
A liberal journalist working in the Nation's Capital, he cared little for religion one way or the other. He held, like so many of his peers, a thoroughly negative opinion of the infamous figure. On the day Milton died, Addison was assigned to write an in-depth story meant to bury the fundamentalist preacher in vitriol. He expected the piece to be an easy one.
However, as he talked with those who knew Milton, both friend and foe alike, Addison's image of the late preacher became more complicated.
Far from a simple assignment, the story would take him to places he never thought possible.

Spellbinder is the story of a genuine and charismatic believer simply known as "Preacher", who returns from the foxholes and horrors of Vietnam with a simple goal: to spread the word of peace, love, and charity. He immediately attracts a following as he moves from California communes to small surfing towns. "The Church", as his mobile flock is now known, is a culture that centers as much on sex and drugs as prayers, sacraments, and salvation.

Story
What if we all woke one day to discover that every act of generosity was followed, soon after, by an unexpected windfall? If theft or betrayal led to rapid calamity? Within minutes, the effects of instant karma would be felt by each one of us. Within hours it wouldn’t just be ordinary folks trying to figure out the new order—it would be everyone from the President down. Instant Karma is the story of that day. An extraordinary vision, and early adopters are quick to capitalise on the new dynamics while karma change deniers vehemently dig in their heels.

Story
Evangellyfish is a ruthless, grimly amused, and above all, honest look at one of the darkest corners in the western world. Douglas Wilson, a pastor of more than 30 years, paints a vivid and painful picture of evangelical boomchurch leadership...in bed. Chad Lester's kingdom is found in the Midwest. When Lester is (falsely) accused of molesting a young male counselee, his universe begins to crumble. He is a sexual predator, yes. But strictly straight. Detectives, reporters, assistant pastors, and old lovers and pay-offs all come out to play.

Clare Fergusson, St. Alban's new priest, fits like a square peg in the conservative Episcopal parish at Miller's Kill, New York. She is not just a "lady"; she's a tough ex-Army chopper pilot, and nobody's fool. Then a newborn infant left at the church door brings her together with the town's police chief, Russ Van Alstyne, who's also ex-Army and a cynical good shepherd for the stray sheep of his hometown.

1) What star rating (out of 5) would you give this book?
5, given how it was written, and how the delivery was through the book.
2) What did you like about the book?
It was well written with a positive message from unlikely sources, which shows a character that doesn't seem to exist anymore.
3) What did you dislike about the book?
Nothing.
4) Would you read it again?
I am not sure it would qualify as the classics to say yes. However, it is one I would recommend to others.
5) Who is the intended audience of the book?
I would say everyone. While the focus is more on modern social and political issues, it was a good read and outlook on how society should be.
6) What could have been improved?
Nothing comes to mind.
7) What did you learn from reading this?
N/A
8) What did you think of the book’s length?
It was fitting for the story told.
9) What's another book this one reminds you of?
None, but something I feel I should work on as I really enjoyed the book.
10) What other books by this author have you read?
None.

Thoroughly enjoyed
I met Michael Gryboski through Twitter. I asked everyone for a book recommendation I could listen to through Amazon Audiobooks and he suggested his. I’m glad he did. Very well written and an excellent moral to the story. I feel like we, as a nation, are to polarized and too vocal about the polarization. It’s okay to disagree but if we tried to see where the other side is coming from there would be less tension. Most people are good. This book helped open your eyes to that fact.
