About this listen

At last, the rest of the story...

Ten years and 12 million copies after the first printing of The Bridges of Madison County, Robert James Waller brings to a poignant conclusion his story of the love affair between a wandering photographer and the conventional wife of an Iowa farmer.

In A Thousand Country Roads, Robert Kincaid initially finds himself with little but memories - memories of a lonely existence lived mostly on the road and memories of Francesca Johnson, the woman whose passion he stirred so briefly and with such power. Kincaid takes to the road again in what becomes a journey of discovery and surprise. With his dog Highway beside him, Kincaid begins a long winding run back to Roseman Bridge in Madison County, Iowa, returning to the place of his great love affair.

Living her own solitary life, Francesca still visits Roseman Bridge and reflects on her days and nights with Robert Kincaid. Cherishing the memory of the strange wandering man who changed her world, she vows to search for him.

the narrator for this book did a good job I was able to listen to the story without being annoying. the story hits home in my heart because of a soulmate feeling situation that I had that never quite got over. So I can understand these two characters and how they feel about each other and how they had to go through life. It's kind of a simple story but it's one you should give a chance if you have not seen the movie or read the book Bridges of Madison County check it out. I just decided to listen to this one because I wanted to hear the story from the photographer's standpoint and see what else was brought to the storyline from there. I enjoyed it.

3.5 stars. An epilogue to The Bridges of Madison County, a “book of endings“ as the author states. This book was true to the original story in that no outcomes were changed. It does add more to the story later in life, especially following Robert Kincaid. It makes the reader think about chance encounters, and also about missing these interactions by just a few miles, or just a few moments. Worth a read if you have read and enjoyed The Bridges of Madison County.

..but how could it? we already knew they never
saw each other again....but almost...oh how wonderful that would have been.

I wanted the ending to change

I put this book down many times thinking that perhaps I'd never finish it. I was looking for a happy ending for Robert and Francisca. I eventually waded through the first 3 hours to get some closure on the life of the photographer, Robert Kindaid.

The last third of the book gave me some satisfaction.

So many stories left untold about Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincade. This book took on a life of its own, or rather, a life about Carlisle. I sure wish we had learned more about Francesca. But, I suppose writers are always looking for a sequel. Readers, however, I think we might have been looking more for a happy ending to that which had begun so many years earlier between Robert Kincaid and Francesca Johnson.

Sadly...far more about Carlisle than Francesca and Kincade.
